Smithtown High School East Science Research Coordinator Maria Zeitlin Receives Prestigious National Chemistry Teaching Award
Smithtown High School East’s Science Research Coordinator, Maria Zeitlin, has garnered one of the nation’s highest accolades for high school chemistry educators—the 2027 James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching awarded by the American Chemical Society.
This honor celebrates exceptional high school chemistry teachers whose influence has significantly advanced student learning and enriched chemistry education. The award is supported by an endowed fund initiated by the Journal of Chemical Education and ChemEd X, recognizing educators for their teaching excellence, innovative educational strategies, and steadfast commitment to the field.
With over 20 years of experience in science research education on Long Island, Zeitlin currently focuses on both enhancing chemistry instruction and providing students with invaluable opportunities to engage in scientific research.
In her own words, Zeitlin expressed her pride in receiving the award, highlighting how it acknowledges not only her work in chemistry but also her contributions to the research community. “It’s very special,” she noted, sharing her pride in representing East High School.
Principal Paul McNeil remarked on Zeitlin’s profound impact, stating, “Ms. Zeitlin’s tireless work in both chemistry and scientific research at Smithtown High School East continues to inspire our students and staff.” He emphasized that her recognition on a national stage is a significant milestone for the entire school community.
Dr. Stephanie O’Brien, the Director of Science for Smithtown Central School District, commended Zeitlin for cultivating a robust research culture among students. “A rare few transform how students approach science,” O’Brien said, noting the lasting legacy Zeitlin has created.
With this award, Zeitlin joins the ranks of distinguished chemistry educators recognized nationally for their contributions to high school science education, solidifying her legacy in the field.
