CULLMAN, Ala. – A newly launched strength and fitness class at Cullman First Baptist Church is designed to help local seniors enhance their balance, build strength, and foster community connections.
Jeanne Madara initiated this class after experiencing a fall in the church parking lot last year, prompting her to reassess her health. “At 62, I realized that maintaining our balance and strength is crucial as we age. If we don’t stay active, we risk losing these essential qualities,” Madara noted.
Following her fall, Madara discovered that many others in the community had faced similar challenges, which highlighted the need for such a program. As the coordinator of the church’s senior group, Seasoned Saints, she was motivated to facilitate a supportive environment where members could improve their physical health. The class meets every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in a designated room on the lower level of the church.
The session begins with around 15 minutes of balance exercises, utilizing chairs for support, before shifting to approximately 30 minutes of seated strength training. Guided workouts led by online instructors are projected on a large screen, allowing participants to work at their own pace without any prior registration. This inclusivity means anyone can join, regardless of their fitness level. Some members are even using the class as a complement to their physical therapy during recovery from surgeries.
“My intention was to foster encouragement and accountability,” Madara explained. “While people could do these exercises at home, we often find it challenging to stay committed on our own.”
Although the class is in its early stages, Madara reports that there is room for growth, with the possibility of relocating to a larger space if needed. Participants have expressed that the class not only enhances their physical well-being but also provides a supportive community where friendships can flourish.
“We genuinely enjoy our time together,” Madara added. “The encouragement we offer each other leads to forming new friendships.”
