Tampa Bay Ferry Secures Federal Funding for Dock
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Ferry is one step closer to operating with the announcement of federal funding to aid in building a permanent dock in St. Petersburg. Recent developments from local leaders revealed that $850,000 in federal funds will contribute to the dock’s estimated $3 million cost.
The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) has already purchased two vessels aimed at ferrying passengers between Tampa and St. Pete. U.S. Representative Kathy Castor participated in the announcement of the funding, emphasizing the benefits of reducing traffic congestion for commuters crossing the Bay.
Currently in the design phase, the dock will be situated along the St. Pete Pier near the Museum of History. Meanwhile, a temporary dock along Bayshore Drive is expected to be completed later this month.
Representative Castor remarked, “This is the first step in a broader initiative to solve problems, reduce congestion, and lower costs for our neighbors.”
Background
The ferry service previously ceased operations due to a contract dispute with its former operator. The two newly acquired boats, Bay Breeze and Bay Clipper, which have capacities of 250 and 150 passengers respectively, are undergoing refurbishment in Tarpon Springs. They will provide year-round service, operating seven days a week.
Captain Dylan Hubbard, owner of Hubbard’s Marina, expressed optimism about getting the ferry back into service, highlighting the dock’s importance for reliable transport.
Future Developments
Additionally, PSTA has secured a $16.5 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration for a brand-new vessel for the ferry service, which is set to be designed by 2029 or 2030.
The ferry will provide a vital connection near the Convention Center on the Tampa side, serving as a critical link for transit systems in the area.
