Du Quoin, IL: Community Rallies After Downtown Fire
In the aftermath of a devastating fire that swept through downtown Du Quoin, local business owner Sam Burns of Main Street T’s is stepping up to support his community. He is selling “Du Quoin Strong” T-shirts, with $15 from every shirt sold going to a fire relief fund.
Burns expressed deep concern for the businesses affected, stating, “They’re our neighbors.” Many of the establishments that were damaged, like Cressman’s and BJ’s Garden Inn, held personal significance for him, where he enjoyed daily interactions and meals.
The fire, which ignited at Home Lumber Co., spread rapidly, prompting a response from over 30 fire departments and emergency agencies in Southern Illinois. While firefighters battled the blaze, Burns temporarily closed his shop but opened it as a rest area for first responders, offering a place to cool down and hydrate.
As the firefighters worked, community members rallied, bringing water, food, and supplies to those on the front lines. Inspired by this spirit of assistance, Burns decided to create the fundraising shirts, seeing it as another avenue to contribute.
He noted the importance of downtown businesses, not just for commerce, but for community connection. “Those relationships, those small interactions are important,” he said, lamenting the loss of cherished local gathering spots.
Despite the tragedy, Burns highlighted the overwhelming support from the community, noting how it restored his faith during a difficult time. Orders for the shirts can be made via the Main Street T’s Facebook page, with pickups scheduled for September 11, coinciding with Du Quoin’s home football game and a night recognizing first responders and military personnel.
Burns praised the efforts of emergency crews, calling them heroes for their work and dedication in the face of adversity.
