Cilena Mathieu, a distinguished science teacher at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute, has been awarded the 2026 Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM. This accolade is one of Canada’s highest honors in education, recognizing only 60 educators nationwide this year.

Program Development and Student Engagement

Mathieu developed a unique space exploration curriculum after attending professional development sessions at the Kennedy Space Centre and Johnson Space Centre. Inspired by student curiosity about her experiences, she worked closely with her principal and colleague, Elaine Jacklynn, to create and receive approval for the program, which now includes partnerships with the Lethbridge Astronomy Society and the University of Lethbridge’s physics department.

A Passion for Hands-On Learning

Mathieu emphasizes practical learning experiences, which have transformed her classroom into an engaging environment. Not only does she emphasize theoretical knowledge, but she also connects students to real-world opportunities. This approach led her to organize a field trip to the Kennedy Space Centre, allowing 15 students to participate in an astronaut training program.

Her commitment to professional development has fueled her passion for STEM education. She has participated in various initiatives, including the Einstein Plus Program at the Perimeter Institute, which focuses on theoretical physics, and an opportunity at CERN in Switzerland.

Recognition by Students and Colleagues

Mathieu was nominated for the award by her peers and students, with testimonials highlighting her dedication and influence. Jacklynn commended her for fostering curiosity among students, while Grade 12 student Sachee Josan described Mathieu as an inspirational mentor who passionately engages students both in and out of the classroom.

Through innovative teaching methods and a commitment to student engagement, Cilena Mathieu continues to make a significant impact on her students and the broader educational community in Alberta.
