Modern Icon: Akio Toyoda
A Visionary Leader in Automotive History
Throughout automotive history, some truly iconic and impactful leaders have emerged. Most that come to mind are likely the founders of the brands themselves. However, in more recent times, it’s harder to pinpoint a leader who has made an impact beyond the boardroom into the automotive community.
One of the most recognizable modern leaders is Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s longtime chief. He has guided the brand through the challenges of electrified mobility and has revived Toyota’s racing and sporting heritage with initiatives like the Lexus LFA and the Gazoo Racing (GR) lineup. Toyoda’s contributions have been recognized with his induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame.

Akio Toyoda: Hall of Famer
Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda was officially inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in a ceremony held in Detroit, Michigan. Over 700 attendees from across the automotive sector came to support him. Notably, Greg Penske of the Penske Automotive Group introduced Toyoda, emphasizing the lasting partnership between Toyota and Penske.
Penske highlighted that “Akio’s presidency began as a trial by fire,” facing significant challenges such as the global financial crisis and a major recall. He noted how Toyoda worked tirelessly to eliminate “boring cars,” leading to the creation of the beloved GR models. Not only did he oversee new sports cars, but he also became a Master Driver, racing under the alias Morizo, and participated in events like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.

In His Own Words
During the ceremony, Toyoda shared a personal anecdote about having been in an accident while test-driving one of Toyota’s new off-road vehicles just two days before. He expressed gratitude to the global Toyota family of 400,000 members, attributing his success to exceptional partners.
Toyoda emphasized the emotional connection people have with cars, stating, “Who in the world has ever been unhappy when taking delivery of a car? Cars are exciting, joyful, extraordinary things.” He stressed the unique ability of the automotive industry to enhance lives and encouraged collaboration over competition to create a positive impact on society.
