Local Company Affected by Rising Diesel Costs

Diesel Dependency Challenges at Sierra Feed

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Sierra Feed in Reno operates like a bustling hub, even on an average day. According to owner Mindy Cannady, their operations rely entirely on diesel fuel, stating, “Everything we take out, everything we bring in… it’s 100% diesel fuel.”

This includes hay deliveries and various feed types for animals—ranging from pigs to birds. The store also stocks dog and cat food, clothing, gardening supplies, and grooming tools, all transported via diesel-powered vehicles.

Cannady has noted a significant increase in freight costs, with prices nearly doubling overnight and ongoing fuel surcharges impacting their deliveries. This poses a substantial challenge for the business.

At Sierra Feed’s checkout, customers are informed about delivery costs, which may fluctuate. Mindy emphasizes that while pets must be fed, some customers are making sacrifices to ensure their animals are cared for; hence, she strives to accommodate everyone’s needs.

To manage rising operational costs, deliveries may be delayed as they wait to fill trucks in order to maximize fuel efficiency. Discounts for cash payments or bulk purchases have been eliminated due to these financial pressures.

Additionally, Cannady has been actively supporting local families affected by recent fires, acknowledging the store’s role in assisting evacuated communities.

With diesel prices continuing to rise, Cannady has become resourceful in navigating these challenges, but she remains hopeful about the future. Sierra Feed will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, and despite the hurdles, Cannady aims to sustain the business for another 50 years.
