Four Generations of Family Maintain Their Chocolate Business’s Sweet Success

Family Legacy in Candy Making: Snowflake Chocolates

JERICHO, Vt. – At Snowflake Chocolates, the candy-making process is thriving as the Pollack family prepares their next batch. Founded by Martha Pollack, the business honors the legacy of Snowflake Bentley, the first person to photograph snowflakes, a fitting tribute to their unique creations.

For over 40 years, Bob and Martha Pollack have made distinctive homemade confections. Bob, the patriarch, leads alongside four generations, including his grandson Alex, who began helping at the age of five. Now 38, Alex attests he “kind of came back one day and never left.”

The family dynamic is both fun and challenging. “We’re very good at arguing with each other,” said Shelly, the youngest daughter, emphasizing that despite disagreements, family bonds remain strong. At 86, Bob works tirelessly, often putting in 60 hours a week during the busy season.

One of the unique aspects of their craft is the traditional methods used, including hand-rolling strawberry cream for their chocolates. Bob’s love for candy-making stems from childhood memories spent with his father, who was a steelworker making candy on the side.

With their story rooted in family memories, Sharon, one of Bob and Martha’s daughters, captures the essence of the business: “It’s an amazing, incredible, family-run business.”

As Bob says, “Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.” Their success is built on love, hard work, and a shared passion for creating something special.
