Back in Style: Princess Diana’s ‘Revenge Dress’ Displayed Before Sotheby’s Auction

This article covers the auction of a famous black dress worn by Princess Diana, known as the “revenge dress.” The dress will be auctioned at Sotheby’s with a presale estimate of up to $300,000. It gained its name after Diana wore it on June 29, 1994—the same day her estranged husband, then-Prince Charles, publicly admitted to adultery during an interview.

The dress is a striking off-the-shoulder design by Greek designer Christina Stambolian, which Diana chose as a way to take control of her narrative amidst the turmoil of her marriage. Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, Morgane Halimi, emphasizes the outfit’s significance in expressing Diana’s personal strength.

The dress is on an international tour starting in London before traveling to Hong Kong and Geneva, culminating in a New York auction on December 9. It is significant not only for its aesthetic but also for its connection to Diana’s life and legacy, as her fashion choices often reflected her personal emotions and challenges.
