If You Had Put $5,000 into VGT a Decade Ago, Here’s What Your Investment Would Be Worth Now

Over the last decade, the technology sector has dominated the stock market, as highlighted by the impressive performance of the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (VGT). This ETF has seen a staggering 736% increase, turning a $5,000 investment into approximately $41,820, or $45,150 when factoring in dividends.

Launched in January 2004, VGT has averaged annual returns of 23.7% over the past decade, benefiting from trends in smart hardware, cloud computing, and the recent boom in artificial intelligence. The ETF is heavily weighted towards major tech companies—Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft together compose over 44% of its assets.

Despite its top-heavy structure, VGT’s focus on established tech leaders has proven worthwhile. Looking ahead, while it’s unlikely to replicate past returns, VGT is expected to outperform the broader market due to the increasing influence of major technology firms.
