Why a Dietitian is Advocating for ‘Ultra-Processed’ Foods

The 2024 study discussed suggests that while there is a link between heavily processed foods and risks of premature death, the overall quality of one’s diet may be more crucial than merely the quantity of processed foods consumed. It indicates that individuals can maintain health even with some processed foods in their diet, especially if they are also eating a variety of nutritious options.

Critics of ultra-processed foods, such as van Tulleken, acknowledge that not all processed foods are created equal. He highlights the dangers posed by ultra-processed foods high in salt, sugar, and saturated fats—ingredients that are problematic regardless of their source. Van Tulleken emphasizes that the issue arises not from these ingredients themselves, but from their combination in industrially produced foods designed to be extremely appealing, often leading to overconsumption. He believes that home cooking, which typically involves more balanced ingredient mixing, mitigates these concerns.
