Recently, the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a directive prohibiting judicial officers from utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot for drafting judgments or legal research.
A letter disseminated on April 6, 2026, from the High Court Registrar-General, addressed to all district and sessions judges in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, emphasized that the Chief Justice has mandated them “to instruct all judicial officers under your supervision to refrain from using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, including but not limited to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, for composing judgments and conducting legal research. Non-compliance with these directives will be regarded seriously.”
Previously, the Gujarat High Court had also banned the use of AI in various aspects such as decision-making, judicial reasoning, drafting orders, preparing judgments, and determining bail sentencing.

According to the AI policy released by the Gujarat High Court at a district judiciary judges’ conference on April 4, 2026, the objective is to utilize artificial intelligence to enhance the efficiency and quality of justice delivery, rather than substituting judicial reasoning.
