ASCI Flags 500+ Beauty Brands for Ad Norm Violations: Honasa, HUL, DOVE, L’Oréal, and Nykaa Lead

Introduction

In today’s digital age, the intersection of fitness, health, and marketing has led many consumers to rely on influencers for advice and product recommendations. However, as oversight increases within the beauty and personal care industry, it’s crucial for consumers to understand the dynamics at play. This article explores the current challenges facing influencer marketing, particularly in the beauty sector, and offers practical advice for navigating this landscape.

India’s beauty and personal care market is rapidly evolving, but it’s also facing closer scrutiny regarding the advertising practices employed by various brands. Recent findings from the Advertising Standards Council of India revealed that over 500 brands have not adhered to established advertising norms between 2025 and January 2026. Issues range from misleading claims to inadequate transparency regarding influencer partnerships.

Understanding the Regulatory Concerns

Many brands have been caught making exaggerated claims about their products. Complaints often cite terms like “natural” and “Ayurvedic” being used without sufficient evidence backing these assertions. A significant concern is the lack of clear disclosures when influencers promote products. According to Manisha Kapoor, CEO & Secretary General of ASCI, many promotions fail to clearly communicate whether influencers are being compensated for their endorsements.

Honasa Consumer Private Limited has notably been flagged for a staggering 23 advertising violations, which include insufficient influencer disclosures. Popular products from their line, such as Mamaearth’s Beetroot Hydraful Light Gel Moisturizer and various Vitamin C sunscreens, are among those cited.

Following closely is L’Oreal India, with 20 reported advertising violations, 13 of which relate to influencer non-disclosure. ASCI emphasizes that influencers should label their paid partnerships clearly—using tags like “Ad,” “Sponsored,” or “Partnership”—yet many do not comply effectively.

Other notable violators include Rabiko Lifestyle and Nykaa, both of which have received multiple flags for similar lapses, particularly regarding undisclosed influencer promotions.

The Structural Issues in Influencer Marketing

Industry analysts argue that the core problem lies within the structural incentives brands face. As they turn to influencers for marketing, especially micro and nano influencers who often seem more relatable to consumers, there’s an increasing temptation to exaggerate claims and neglect disclosures. Kapoor points out that the trust these influencers build with followers can be exploited, leading to ethical breaches within the marketing framework.

Interestingly, a countertrend is emerging known as “de-influencing,” where creators call out dubious products, suggesting a growing skepticism among consumers. Supriya Chouthoy, an Associate Professor of Marketing, observes that this movement underscores the influence that creators wield and a rising awareness among their audience.

Consumer Awareness and Empowerment

Beyond the issues of transparency and ethics, ASCI has also shown concern over the vague and often unsubstantiated use of terms like “green,” “natural,” and “Ayurvedic.” These labels can create misleading perceptions about a product’s quality or efficacy without concrete scientific backing.

At present, it seems the marketing landscape is heavily favoring brands, who view influencer partnerships as a cost-effective way to reach specific audiences. Meanwhile, influencers are capitalizing on their audience’s trust, often without accountability.

Conclusion

As consumers navigate the complex world of influencer marketing, it’s essential to approach these recommendations with caution. Treat influencer promotions with skepticism; discern whether they are offering genuine advice or simply pushing products for profit. By being informed and critically assessing what you consume—whether advice or products—you can make better decisions for your personal care and fitness journey.
