From her research efforts, Barnes’s team discovered that extensive data models can effectively predict hurricanes across various years and seasons. They also devised a method that integrates machine learning with analog forecasting to enhance multi-year climate predictions. The team collaborated with other researchers to amalgamate climate model simulations and exchange data, analyzing how extreme weather events in one country might influence others.

“In her work, Libby doesn’t see separate disciplines; she views them all as tools for tackling broad, complex problems. That’s the essence of convergent research,” remarked Azer Bestavros, Associate Provost for Computing and Data Sciences.

She employs these tools to project years into the future.

“Uncertainty quantification is critical in [the Earth sciences], as we focus heavily on prediction. You can liken it to weather forecasting, but we look out decades into the future,” Barnes added.

Her research continues as the fields of AI and Earth science advance.

“I’m in this field because I believe it’s significant, and at this stage, AI and Earth science don’t seem like two distinct areas to me,” she reflected. “It feels as though I am working within one field, asking, ‘What’s next?’ For me, what’s next is using these tools for challenging endeavors that we perhaps didn’t previously understand how to approach or even know to inquire about.”
