BYD Plans to Introduce Solid-State Battery Technology in a Vehicle Next Year, According to Executive Statement

BYD is set to unveil a vehicle using its solid-state battery technology next year, as stated by Executive Vice President Stella Li during an interview. While this announcement marks a significant step towards integrating this advanced battery technology, it currently represents more of a demonstration effort rather than a clear retail launch or mass production timeline.

Li confirmed that BYD is exploring various battery technologies in its R&D, positioning the company at the forefront of both commercial options and technological advancements. However, specific details regarding the production date, vehicle model, battery specifications, or performance metrics remain undisclosed.

The solid-state batteries, particularly those utilizing sulfide chemistry, face engineering challenges. These hurdles include maintaining connections at solid-solid interfaces under mechanical stress, which can lead to capacity retention issues. The transition from laboratory-sized cells to practical automotive battery packs requires addressing these complexities, alongside ensuring manufacturing practices can handle the unique properties of sulfide electrolytes.

Other players in the solid-state battery field, such as Toyota and Samsung SDI, have also set similar timelines for mass production, but the significant challenge lies in scaling from pilot projects to reliable manufacturing. BYD is targeting small-scale trials by around 2027, with broader commercial production planned for around 2030, particularly focusing on higher-end models where the costs of solid-state technology can be better accommodated.

As BYD continues to collaborate within China’s All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform, the company anticipates a longer transition period, with liquid lithium-ion batteries coexisting with solid-state systems for many years. The forthcoming vehicle will be a crucial test of BYD’s sulfide technology and its feasibility for practical applications.
