The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University will officially close its museum in Philadelphia on September 30, 2026, prompting protests from groups advocating for its continued operation. A rally organized by Green Philly, Philadelphia Science Action, and Skype a Scientist is set for September 8 outside the museum.
Since its founding in 1812 and opening in 1828, the Academy has been dedicated to scientific discovery and public engagement. Drexel University President Antonio Merlo and Board Chair Suzanne Biemiller cited rising operational costs, funding cuts, and the need for a sustainable future as reasons for the closure.
Despite the impending closure, the Academy emphasizes its commitment to public education and stewardship of its extensive collection, which includes over 19 million specimens. The museum has already reduced its operating hours amid decreased visitor rates. Protesters argue that losing the museum would diminish the community’s connection to science, especially during critical times like the climate crisis.
Additionally, the Academy announced that its president and CEO, Scott Cooper, has resigned but will assist during the transition.
