Now, the two standout features from that announcement—AI Overviews in Drive and Ask Gemini in Drive—are officially available to users everywhere.
With this update, Google is revolutionizing how we interact with our stored files. Instead of sifting through countless folders to locate a specific document, Drive can now comprehend your files and provide direct answers to your queries. Here’s an overview of these two groundbreaking features hitting your account.
AI Overviews in Drive for Smarter Searching
If you’re weary of toggling through multiple tabs just to track a project’s status, the new AI Overviews in Drive feature will be a tremendous time-saver.
This innovation, integrated into the Drive search bar, utilizes Gemini to analyze your documents and deliver a concise, synthesized response right at the top of your search results.

- Ask Naturally: Forget about relying solely on exact keyword matches. You can now pose conversational questions such as, “What’s in our Spring 2026 catalog?” or “What are the key takeaways from the Q3 marketing report?”
- See the Big Picture: Gemini will gather pertinent information from multiple files, summarizing the answer so you don’t have to read each document individually.
- Seamless Transitions: If the summary leaves you wanting more details, a single click will allow you to engage in a deeper conversation with Gemini.
Ask Gemini in Drive
While AI Overviews offer quick insights, Ask Gemini in Drive is designed for in-depth research and workflow management. This feature creates a dedicated, immersive workspace for multi-turn discussions about selected files.
- Drive Projects: One of the most exciting features. You can now gather related files and folders into a central “Drive project,” which serves as a constantly updated knowledge base that can be shared with your team, simplifying the management of complex workflows.
- Persistent History: Your chat history is saved, allowing you to easily resume previous research sessions without needing to re-prompt the AI.
- Focused Discussions: By limiting your prompts to specific folders or a Drive project, you gain accurate, actionable insights rather than generic responses.
Rollout and Availability
Both features operate securely within the Drive environment, ensuring that Gemini only accesses content you’re authorized to view, adhering to your existing Workspace permissions and security protocols.
Google is also broadening language support globally. The English rollout starts this week (April 22 for Rapid Release domains and early May for Scheduled Release), with support for 28 additional languages to follow in early to mid-May.
To utilize these new features, ensure you have Workspace smart features enabled. They are currently available for the following tiers:
- Business: Standard and Plus
- Enterprise: Standard and Plus
- Consumer: Google AI Pro and Ultra
- Education Add-ons: Google AI Pro for Education
