In a recent vlog, YouTuber Aaryamann Sethi shared that he is incorporating ghee into his morning routine to help “kick off” his metabolism. During a discussion with his fiancée, Yogita Bihani, he remarked, “Aaj main ghee khaa raha hun (I am eating ghee today),” to which Yogita responded, “Main shock me chali gayi. Usne bola coffee, garam paani… (I went into shock…he said coffee, warm water…)”.

Aaryamann explained his reasoning: “Thoda metabolism ko kick off karenge. Yeh bahut healthy hota hai… (I want to kick off my metabolism. This is healthy).”

To gain a better understanding of this trend, we consulted a dietitian.

Consultant dietitian Garima Goyal indicated that there is a common belief that certain morning rituals can immediately enhance the metabolic rate. “While the idea seems appealing, a deeper understanding of the science is essential,” Goyal stated.

Beginning the day with warm water can indeed aid in hydration and support digestion after fasting overnight. “It stimulates gut movement and might make you feel lighter, but it doesn’t significantly boost your metabolic rate,” she added.

On the other hand, coffee has a measurable impact. “The caffeine can temporarily enhance alertness and slightly increase metabolic activity. It may also improve workout performance if consumed before exercising. However, these effects are mild and short-lived, not constituting a long-term metabolism booster,” Goyal explained.

The idea of including ghee in one’s diet is often associated with claims of enhancing metabolism or assisting in weight loss. “In reality, ghee contains healthy fats, which can promote satiety and provide energy when used judiciously. However, adding fat to your morning drink does not inherently ‘activate’ metabolism. Instead, it increases calorie intake, which is crucial to consider, especially for those focused on weight management,” advised Goyal.

From a clinical perspective, metabolism isn’t something that can be “switched on” with a single habit or drink. It’s influenced by various factors, such as muscle mass, physical activity, sleep quality, hormonal balance, and overall dietary habits,” Goyal shared.

While creating such routines can establish a sense of structure and consistency—which is beneficial for better lifestyle choices—depending solely on them as shortcuts for fat loss or enhanced metabolic rates can be misleading.

In summary, while exploring morning routines like consuming ghee may seem appealing, understanding the science behind metabolism is essential. Relying solely on these practices may not yield the desired results; instead, a balanced approach to diet and lifestyle is key to effective health management.
