Environmental organizations file lawsuit against Trump administration for easing vehicle fuel efficiency regulations.

Environmental groups have initiated a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the reversal of vehicle fuel efficiency standards. This action, they assert, could lead to increased gasoline consumption and higher prices for U.S. drivers. Katherine Garcia from Sierra Club criticized the move as unlawful and detrimental to both consumer finances and air quality.

The updated Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards require automakers to achieve an average of 34.9 miles per gallon by 2031, a significant reduction from the earlier goal of 50.4 miles per gallon set by the prior Biden administration. The Department of Transportation claims the new standards will lower vehicle costs by $1,300 and reduce oil consumption. However, critics argue that less stringent efficiency standards will elevate costs for consumers and contribute to harmful emissions.

Organizations such as Public Citizen and the Center for Biological Diversity have joined the lawsuit, emphasizing the need for more fuel-efficient vehicles. The Transportation Department and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have not yet commented on the legal challenge.

Historically, fuel economy requirements have been implemented since the 1970s energy crisis, leading to improved vehicle efficiency over time.
