Tracking Open Science: A Broader Perspective
Open science is increasingly recognized as a key objective in global research policies. However, recent discussions at the 4th OECD Blue Sky Forum revealed significant gaps in how we currently track its progress.
Mona Nemer, Canada’s chief science adviser, questioned the adequacy of publications as a measure of scientific impact. Christian Naczinsky, chair of the OECD committee for scientific and technological policy, emphasized that the focus should not merely be on gathering more data but on discerning which evidence is genuinely useful, timely, and comparable for assessing impact.
This brings to light the need for a more holistic approach in evaluating open science, moving beyond traditional metrics to capture the full scope of its influence.
