Florida entrepreneurs believe raising the minimum wage might aid in keeping Alabama employees.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Important Change in Florida’s Minimum Wage

Starting at the end of September, Florida’s minimum wage will increase by $1. This means:

  • Non-tipped workers will earn $15 an hour.
  • Tipped employees will earn nearly $12 an hour.

Impact on Alabama Workers
Business owners in Florida are observing a shift as Alabama workers cross the border for better pay. Collier Merrill, president of Great Southern Restaurants, noted that some employees commute from Alabama, significantly benefiting from the wage difference.

  • Alabama’s minimum wage is currently around $7 an hour, while Florida’s new rate will offer substantially higher earnings. For instance, a 40-hour workweek would yield $560 in Florida versus $280 in Alabama.

Mixed Reactions Among Alabama Managers
Some Alabama restaurant managers are worried about losing staff. One unnamed manager mentioned it’s a straightforward choice for workers to take higher-paying jobs in Florida. However, others, like Scott Mace from Sweet Cone Alabama, are less concerned. Mace noted:

  • His beach locale is seasonal, with part-time workers returning to school, so the situation may not heavily affect his business.

Workers’ Perspectives
Some Alabama workers are considering moving to Florida for better pay. Yet, those in non-seasonal jobs mentioned that their year-round tips can sometimes surpass a higher hourly wage in Florida.

Future of Wage Increases
The increase on September 30 is part of a gradual raise initially voted on in 2020, where minimum wage has been climbing by a dollar each year. Future adjustments will be tied to inflation.
