Tulsa Guitar Company Expands Its Horizons
TULSA, Okla. – After 41 years of dedication to music, the Tulsa Guitar Company, previously known as Tulsa Band and Guitars, is marking a new chapter with a move to a bigger location in east Tulsa.
Founded in 1985 by Paul Felzke, Tulsa Guitar Company is a family-run business. Like many others during the COVID-19 pandemic, their sales in band and orchestra instruments took a hit. In response, owner Trey Johnson relocated the company from its original site, which had been home for 30 years, to a more compact space focused on guitars. This transition led to significant growth in guitar sales, prompting the need for yet another move.
“It’s been going amazing,” Johnson remarked. “We have twice as much space now, allowing for more offerings and repairs. We even have a stage for live events, shows, and classes, along with two dedicated lesson rooms that also serve as demo spaces for trying out gear.”
As part of this expansion, Tulsa Guitar Company is bringing back the Hondo Guitars brand, which was established in 1969 and known for its affordable instruments. The revival aims to offer accessible music-making tools while introducing new on-site guitar building.
“We’re assembling instruments on-site and completing the finishing work,” Johnson explained. “This model allows us to offer high-quality instruments without the hefty import costs.”
Music is a lifelong passion for Johnson, who began playing the trumpet and later earned a degree in music from the University of Tulsa. His experience in various music stores ultimately led him to take the helm of Tulsa Guitar Company.
“Music has been a part of my life for so long that owning a music store felt like a natural fit for me,” he said.
Johnson emphasizes that Tulsa Guitar Company is not just a retail space but a community resource that offers personalized service.
“We focus on providing a community experience rather than operating like a big box store,” he noted.
