Emerging Researchers Tackle South Africa’s Water Issues with Innovation and Scientific Solutions

South Africa’s Young Innovators Address Water Challenges

The next generation of South African scientists is tackling one of the nation’s most pressing issues: ensuring sustainable water supplies and safe sanitation amidst the challenges posed by climate change. Researchers from across the country are set to convene at the Academy of Science of South Africa’s (ASSAf) Annual Young Scientist Conference (AYSC) from September 13-15, 2026, at iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu’s Mthatha Campus in the Eastern Cape. The conference, themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” will showcase cutting-edge research aimed at enhancing water security and environmental sustainability.

Among the innovations being presented is AquaGuard—an advanced robotic system that detects water leaks and prevents illegal connections in informal settlements. Other researchers are introducing technologies to eliminate pharmaceutical residues and heavy metals from water sources and using artificial intelligence, GIS, and remote sensing to improve groundwater management.

The conference will also focus on a range of topics including water filtration, wastewater treatment, contamination detection, and sustainable sanitation systems, while also highlighting advancements in nanotechnology and biotechnology.

Understanding the impacts of climate change is integral to the discussions. Young scientists are probing into issues like droughts, extreme weather, and river biodiversity to find ways for communities and ecosystems to adapt. They are also exploring strategies like rainwater harvesting and resilience-building for smallholder farmers.

A key feature of the conference is the “Science-for-Policy in Action” session, where participants will tackle real-world policy issues collaboratively, concluding with a simulated Cabinet briefing and a panel discussion with experts.

“Young scientists play a vital role in shaping solutions for South Africa and the continent,” remarked Prof. Himla Soodyall, Executive Officer of ASSAf. The opening program will include notable figures from academia and government, enhancing the event’s significance.

Participants will also tour a local water treatment plant, linking scientific research to the practical aspects of water management. Supported by various organizations including iYunivesithi Walter Sisulu and the OR Tambo District Municipality, this conference emphasizes the importance of young innovators in building a more water-secure and climate-resilient future for Africa amidst growing challenges.
