Esther Rantzen expresses that she is not strong enough to journey to Switzerland for assisted dying.

Dame Esther Rantzen, the 86-year-old broadcaster and Childline founder, has expressed that she is now “too physically fragile” to travel to Switzerland for assisted suicide. She is terminally ill with stage four lung cancer and had previously joined the Dignitas clinic.

In her statement, she emphasized the urgency of legalizing assisted dying in England and Wales, especially as Parliament revisits the proposed legislation. Rantzen noted that she was unable to make the trip when her life became “unbearable” due to her physical condition.

She described the current law as “messy and cruel,” and highlighted the emotional pain of being unable to see loved ones without suffering. Her plea comes amid ongoing debates about assisted dying, with some advocating for change, while others, such as Paralympian Baroness Grey-Thompson, express concerns about potential pressures on vulnerable individuals.

The bill under consideration would allow assisted dying for terminally ill individuals with less than six months to live. If passed, it might not require approval from the House of Lords, marking a significant potential change in the law. Prime Minister Andy Burnham indicated he would not vote on the issue, suggesting improvements in palliative care should be prioritized instead.
