Ozaukee County supervisors recently approved spending nearly $70,000 to upgrade the playground equipment at Waubedonia County Park in Fredonia, a site that has become increasingly popular among campers. The existing playground does not meet current state safety and accessibility standards, and it is heavily used during family gatherings and events.
The County Board had already approved the replacement of this equipment back in April 2025. After receiving two bids, the Natural Resources Committee chose to hire Lee Recreation from Cambridge, Wisconsin, for the installation at a cost of $68,271. The new playground will feature a climbing log, a roofed platform, a spiral slide, and a toddler swing set.
Interest in camping at Waubedonia Park has surged, with camping fees rising from $14,450 through July in 2024 to $22,205 this year. The park attracted 135,127 visitors in 2025, and campsites are routinely reserved, often reaching full capacity during the season.
Future improvements for the park may include new showers, a self-service handicapped accessible kayak and canoe rental station, and a fishing pier. The rental station will allow users to unlock equipment via a mobile app, enhancing accessibility.
There are also plans to develop a kayak and canoe launch at the Waubeka Mill and Button Factory site, creating a loop between locations for paddlers. Additional developments may include constructing a shower room connected to the Village of Fredonia’s water system, which would also serve tennis court users.
The park currently has 17 campsites, six of which have water and electricity for RVs. Plans to possibly add a group campsite and further RV accommodations are in discussion. Furthermore, a new campground is set to open at Hawthorne Hills County Park, featuring additional campsites and restrooms.
