Beware of Online Selling Scams

A resident of Lower Makefield Township recently fell victim to a widespread online scam while trying to sell a vehicle. The scammer, claiming to be overseas, sent a counterfeit cashier’s check for $14,700. After depositing the check, the victim was instructed to send a money order for $4,200 to an Alabama address. Unfortunately, the check was fraudulent, leading the victim to attempt to recover the money order. The investigation is ongoing.
Common Scam Variations
Another prevalent variation involves sellers who list items for sale at a reasonable price (e.g., $2,500). The scammer sends a cashier’s check for an amount greater than the asking price. They then claim an error was made and request the seller to return the excess funds urgently, often after the seller has already shipped the item.
Many victims, believing the check has cleared, are quick to refund the “extra” amount, only to find out weeks later that the check was fake. The scammer disappears, leaving the victim without the item, any cash refunded, and potentially incurring bank fees.
Prevention Tips
Police advise that sellers never accept payment for more than the asking price. Always remain cautious and walk away from a sale if pressured, even if it means losing a potential sale.
