The BepiColombo spacecraft has reached a significant milestone in its journey to Mercury after nearly eight years. The mission, a collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), officially entered its arrival phase on September 3, 2023.

- Payload Separation: The Mercury Transfer Module (MTM), which served as the spacecraft’s main power and propulsion system, successfully released its two probes: the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) from ESA and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (Mio) from JAXA.
- Journey Overview: Launched on October 19, 2018, BepiColombo’s trajectory involved multiple flybys of Earth, Venus, and Mercury to slow its approach to the planet.
- Next Steps: The two spacecraft will navigate towards Mercury over the next six months, with MPO and Mio scheduled to enter orbit around November 21, 2024. Following this, a series of maneuvers will gradually adjust their orbits, with Mio separating from MPO in December 2024.

Operations manager Elsa Montagnon expressed relief over the successful separation, noting it was a complex but essential part of the mission. The completion of today’s maneuver is a crucial step towards achieving BepiColombo’s objectives in understanding one of our solar system’s least-studied planets.
