The recent report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) indicates that humanity is likely to exceed the climate change limit of 1.5°C set by the Paris Agreement within the next few years. This report stresses the urgency for global societies to aim for net-negative greenhouse gas emissions by drastically cutting emissions and enhancing carbon dioxide removal initiatives, a pathway referred to as “overshoot, peak and decline.”
The report emphasizes the necessity of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions by the mid-century and rapidly deploying various carbon dioxide removal technologies, including methods like tree planting, ecosystem restoration, and carbon capture and storage. UNEP’s executive director, Inger Andersen, indicated that this is no longer about achieving the 1.5°C goal but rather managing the temperature from above that limit.
As experts had anticipated, findings suggested Earth might have already entered a critical period where temperatures exceed the 1.5°C threshold, with further studies advising that to revert to this limit, a maximum of 1.8°C must be maintained. However, reaching required levels for effective carbon dioxide removal poses significant challenges, with current technologies lacking scalability. The report urges stronger political action now to prevent crossing dangerous tipping points in Earth’s systems, which could lead to severe ecological and human repercussions.
