Economic development expert Mike Malone highlights the importance of statewide competitiveness.

Mike Malone, a partner at Economic Leadership, emphasized the competitive landscape among cities, counties, and states to attract and retain residents and businesses during a recent economic briefing in Fayetteville, part of Economic Development Week. He discussed the importance of regional cooperation, noting that towns in Northwest Arkansas compete largely with college towns elsewhere in the country.

Malone highlighted positive trends in Arkansas, with job growth outpacing other states and an increase in average wages. He pointed out that while the economic conditions are generally positive, challenges remain, particularly in workforce availability, infrastructure, tax simplification, and achieving full employment.

Key statistics included Arkansas being about 3% below the national average for labor force participation, with improvements noted in recent years. He also addressed the crucial role of energy availability for economic development, warning that lack of power infrastructure could deter businesses.

In terms of technology, Malone cited a Microsoft report indicating that Benton and Washington counties have the highest rates of artificial intelligence utilization in Arkansas. He discussed the impact of AI on various industries, particularly finance and government, and projected growth areas based on population trends.

Economic Leadership’s analysis identifies competitive factors such as business climate, regulations, housing, and quality of life, particularly for remote workers. Malone underscored the need for a broader diversification of the region’s economy beyond its major employers.

Malone, who has a rich background in economic development, stressed the importance of synchronizing education and workforce training with the evolving demands of industry. Overall, the event provided insights into Arkansas’s economic progress and the elements essential for future growth and competitiveness.
