Trump’s Effort to Secure $50 Billion Korean Investment in Alaska Gas Pipeline Encounters Known Economic Hurdles

Korean officials are clarifying their stance regarding South Korea’s potential investment in an Alaska gas pipeline, which President Trump previously announced to be over $50 billion. During a recent lunch in Anchorage, they emphasized that any commitment to invest would occur only after the project’s developer, Glenfarne, makes a final investment decision. Democratic state Senator Bill Wielechowski reported that the Koreans expressed no current decision to invest, stating that it would depend on the project’s commercial viability.

Following Trump’s announcement, Korean officials quickly stated they hadn’t agreed to invest, but rather were beginning discussions for a future investment. Trump insisted he did not prematurely announce the investment and warned that if South Korea backed out, the U.S. would adjust pricing accordingly.

Experts acknowledge that details on agreements often lack clarity, creating challenges for allied nations in dealing with the U.S. administration. Nonetheless, there is optimism that South Korea may still invest due to its energy needs.

While Korean officials mentioned that any investment must be commercially reasonable—comparable or better than government bonds—previous attempts to secure commitments for the project have fallen short, particularly at price points that would justify its considerable costs.

The ongoing Iran War has shifted some dynamics, making the Alaska project more appealing to South Korea. Despite this, the Alaska LNG project remains costlier than competing ventures in the U.S. Gulf Coast and British Columbia, which are already attractive options for gas buyers.

Current customers have shown hesitance to sign firm agreements with Alaska LNG, thus indicating a lengthy process before the project may progress. Vice President J.D. Vance acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the investment but expressed confidence that the administration would facilitate the necessary steps forward.
