Is Arizona Poised to Host the Next U.S. Space Academy? | Arizona News

Arizona is forming a team of space industry leaders to compete for a national aerospace training facility. Governor Katie Hobbs announced the Arizona U.S. Space Academy Steering Committee, which will create the state’s application for the U.S. Space Academy. The committee will include representatives from universities, aerospace companies, and local governments to highlight the state’s capabilities.

Notable members include Arizona State University’s Laurie Leshin, University of Arizona’s Dr. Erika Hamden, and Northern Arizona University’s Dr. David Trilling. It will also include former U.S. Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett and retired Brig. Gen. Pete Worden, along with private sector leaders like Phantom Space CEO Jim Cantrell. Local community representation includes Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls and Sierra Vista Mayor Clea McCaa.

The initiative aims to continue Arizona’s leadership in advanced manufacturing and aerospace following President Trump’s executive order establishing the service academy for NASA mission training.
