Researchers discover concealed substances that may enhance batteries and solar energy solutions.

Researchers have recently made significant discoveries about material formation by examining the intermediate phases that occur when molecular precursors are heated. Traditionally, scientists focus solely on the final product of this process, but this study highlights the importance of the often-overlooked “in-between” stages.

Published in Nature Communications, this research reveals that these hidden phases can lead to new materials that are otherwise challenging to synthesize. Dr. Sebastian Pike from the University of Warwick pointed out that although they weren’t sure what to expect, they were excited to find potentially useful properties within these intermediate forms.

Using specially designed “single-source precursors,” the researchers monitored changes as temperatures increased, unveiling several unknown material phases. Among their findings was a newly identified form of bismuth vanadate called β-BiVO₄, which has unique atomic structures and a significantly larger band gap, enhancing its potential for solar energy applications.

Furthermore, another discovered material showed the ability to store large amounts of lithium, indicating possible applications in next-generation battery technologies. Dr. Dominik Kubicki from the University of Birmingham emphasized that these intermediate materials can possess useful characteristics, paving the way for improved materials in batteries, catalysis, and solar energy.

By employing advanced techniques, the researchers demonstrated how the choice of precursor and its decomposition can greatly affect the resulting materials. This opens new avenues for deliberately creating and stabilizing these intermediate structures for practical applications, possibly leading to a wealth of undiscovered materials in the field of materials science.

In conclusion, the study encourages a shift in perspective: rather than viewing intermediate phases merely as transient stages, they could be valuable in their own right, promising new developments in various technological fields.
