NASA is searching for a hidden subterranean cave on the moon.

Secret Underground Caves on the Moon? NASA’s GIMLI Program Investigates

Despite being a familiar sight in our night sky, the moon still harbors many secrets, including the potential existence of large underground caves formed by ancient lava flows. NASA has initiated a project named GIMLI (Geophysical Instruments for Marius Lunar Pit Investigation) to explore this mystery and gain insights into the moon’s geological history. This initiative is part of a broader effort to gather crucial data ahead of establishing a lunar base, aimed for the south pole.

The Investigation’s Location

GIMLI will focus on Marius Hill Pit, a site first identified by Japan’s Kaguya moon orbiter in 2009. While the pit is clearly visible, researchers suspect it leads to a significant underground network carved out by volcanic activity, revealing more about the moon’s volcanic past.

Benefits of Discovering Lava Tubes

According to Gareth Morgan, deputy principal investigator for GIMLI, confirming the presence of a lava tube would enhance our understanding of lunar volcanism. These lava tubes could serve as natural shelters for astronauts, offering protection from extreme temperatures and radiation, as well as serving as a “bunker” against micrometeorite impacts. Natural cave systems could provide valuable resources for future lunar missions.

How GIMLI Will Search for Moon Caves

GIMLI will use technology such as ground-penetrating radar, seismic sensors, and gravimeters to investigate beneath the lunar surface. The project, a collaboration between the Planetary Science Institute and Honeybee Robotics, aims to gather data transported to the moon via a lander and rover through NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payloads Services program. Researchers will analyze this data to determine the presence and size of any potential lava tubes.

In summary, as NASA embarks on this groundbreaking mission, we await further discoveries that could reshape our understanding of the moon and aid in future exploration.
