Travelers Spending More Time at Airports – On Purpose

A recent survey by Send My Bag reveals a growing trend among American travelers: many are arriving at airports well before their flights, not just for logistics, but to enjoy the airport environment itself.

Key Findings from the Survey

  • 57% of Respondents: More than half of the 1,000 surveyed indicated they arrive early primarily to explore amenities such as dining, shopping, and lounges.
  • Reason for the Trend: Adam Ewart, founder of Send My Bag, suggests that rising airline fees are prompting passengers to seek more enjoyable travel experiences to offset stresses related to costs.

Changing Airport Amenities

Airports are evolving, offering modern attractions like outdoor skating rinks and micro cinemas. Enhanced amenities aim to draw travelers into the airport’s offerings, making their time there more pleasurable.

  • Increased Lounge Access: The rise of credit cards offering lounge access has democratized entry, leading to busier lounges while still providing comfort and luxury.
  • Market Growth: The market for airport lounges is projected to grow significantly, from around $5 billion in 2025 to $20 billion by 2034.

Airport Choice Matters

Interestingly, nearly 60% of travelers select airports based on their facilities, rather than the airlines themselves. Ewart exemplifies this by opting for Bristol Airport over Heathrow to avoid liquid restrictions at security.

Key Factors Influencing Airport Selection

  1. Ease of Navigation (28.3%)
  2. Comfortable Spaces (26.1%)
  3. Shorter Security Wait Times (Over 25%)

Ewart concludes that airports are shifting away from being mere transit points to becoming destinations in their own right, encouraging travelers to engage more with their offerings.

This trend indicates a significant transformation in how travelers perceive airports, viewing them as part of their overall travel experience rather than just a waiting area.
