Political Science Specialist Discusses Power Dynamics in PA Legislature Before Midterm Elections

The upcoming 2026 midterm elections in Pennsylvania will significantly impact the balance of power in the state legislature. With all 203 seats in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives up for grabs—currently held by Democrats with a slim three-seat majority—and the State Senate controlled by Republicans at 27-23, the elections are crucial.

Kristin Kanthak, a political science professor at the University of Pittsburgh, notes that traditionally, the party of the sitting president tends to lose seats in midterm elections, possibly favoring Democrats this time. However, many districts in Pennsylvania are heavily skewed toward either major party, leading to fewer competitive races.

Western Pennsylvania is highlighted as a key battleground, where close races could determine the legislature’s direction. Observers are keen to see if this election will lead to Pennsylvania’s first trifecta since 2014, which would allow Democrats full control of the legislature. Kanthak indicates that Governor Josh Shapiro’s popularity may lead to a coattail effect, boosting Democratic candidates statewide.
