A series of early morning break-ins in Chatham is prompting local business owners to reevaluate their security measures and collaborate for better safety. Five businesses in the 200 to 500 blocks of East 75th Street were targeted, with one of the victims, Nadia Wilkins, describing the experience as “heart wrenching.”
Her beauty salon was broken into, although the burglar left empty-handed, resulting in costly damage due to a broken window.
Arel Israel, owner of Soul-Veg restaurant, reported that this was the fourth time his establishment had been burglarized, and he hosted a meeting with other local businesses in response. This meeting was organized by Alderman William Hall, who informed attendees that the recent break-ins are linked to similar incidents in the Bronzeville area.
Hall emphasized the low level of theft, noting that in some cases the thieves took only a small amount of cash. The community is seeking additional security measures to monitor stores after hours.
Both Wilkins and Israel advocate for a united approach to security, with Wilkins stating, “together we stand, divided we fall.” Israel also expressed his commitment to staying in the neighborhood and investing in employee training rather than turning his restaurant into a fortress.
