Stellantis Italy production increases, yet Fiat 500 underperforms

The Italian car industry faces significant challenges, with Stellantis set to produce around 450,000 vehicles this year, marking a recovery after two years of decline. While production rose by 28% in the first nine months, issues persist, particularly with the hybrid Fiat 500, which is projected to fall short of its production target.

Key highlights include:

  • Passenger Vehicle Production: Increased by 36.7%, largely due to the new Jeep Compass and the Fiat Panda, which constitutes half of Italy’s total car output.
  • Commercial Vehicle Production: Rose by 17.3%, with the Atessa plant accounting for a substantial portion of production.
  • Recent Trends: 2025 saw the lowest output since 1954, and despite hopes for recovery, forecasts predict production levels will not return to past highs.
  • Cassino Plant Decline: Continuing to struggle, output has dropped over one-third compared to last year, prompting calls for a development plan from the government.
  • Global Competition: Chinese brands are increasingly dominating the hybrid market in Europe, impacting local models.
  • Future Outlook: Production in the last quarter might improve with new models launching, but overall targets remain below previous peaks, and Stellantis has indicated it won’t be offering spare capacity to external manufacturers.

The overall landscape indicates a reliance on a few key models and an uncertain demand, challenging Italy’s automotive sector.
