Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries has filed a lawsuit against India’s food regulator for prohibiting its Campa brand products from being marketed as “energy drinks.” This legal action comes after a June 30 directive from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) aimed at regulating high-caffeine beverages. Other companies like PepsiCo and Monster have also challenged this ruling, while Red Bull recently received a temporary approval to continue using the term.
The crackdown reflects a wider effort by Indian authorities to address health concerns associated with such products, which has included raids and new labeling requirements. Reliance claims that the regulator’s actions have significantly harmed its business operations and brand reputation. The Campa brand was revived in 2023 to compete with major players like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo in the rapidly growing energy drinks market, which is experiencing annual sales growth of 12.6%.
