Tacoma Police Investigate Fatal Shooting Downtown

Tacoma, WA — Police are investigating a shooting that left two men dead early Sunday morning around 12:30 a.m. Officers responded to the 800 block of Pacific Avenue, where the victims were declared dead on the scene. No suspects have been arrested at this time.

In addition to the fatalities, a woman was injured and sought treatment at a hospital. Details about the incidents leading up to the shooting remain unclear.

Local business owners are expressing their frustrations. Aaron Artis, who has operated The Method Skateboards & Coffee for five years, stated, “It’s hard enough as it is in a business environment downtown, then to have to deal with these kinds of incidents that continuously happen.” He emphasized the need for greater support from city officials.

Across from the shooting site, community members painted the words “Tacoma isn’t safe” in response to growing concerns about violence. Downtown resident Hailee Calder noted that the violence affects her daily life, making her more vigilant as a single mother.

Tacoma Mayor Anders Ibsen expressed a commitment to public safety, stating, “The safety of our people is our paramount concern,” and reassured that efforts would be made to bring the police department to full staffing levels.

Artis echoed the sentiment for collaboration, urging city officials to engage with business owners to address these issues. Meanwhile, city leaders are expected to discuss budget plans emphasizing public safety during a media briefing on Tuesday afternoon.
