Researchers Discover Possible New Cause of High Blood Pressure and a Potential Treatment: ScienceAlert

A recent study has identified a specific brain region, the lateral parafacial area (pFL), as a potential contributor to some cases of high blood pressure. Conducted by researchers from the University of São Paulo and the University of Auckland, the study suggests that the pFL may cause biological changes that increase blood pressure, particularly by affecting blood vessel constriction.

In experiments with rats, researchers manipulated pFL neurons and observed their impact on blood pressure, breathing patterns, and sympathetic nerve activity. They found that when pFL neurons were activated, blood pressure rose due to the involvement of other brain circuits. This suggests a link between breathing control and hypertension, possibly explaining why some individuals remain hypertensive despite medication.

In addition, the study hints at potential treatment avenues by showing that inactivating the pFL region can reduce blood pressure to normal levels. The researchers also explored targeting the carotid bodies—which influence pFL neuron activity—as a strategy for managing hypertension. A related study indicated that a compound derived from vitamin B6 could lower blood pressure by modulating carotid body activity.

While the findings are based on animal models, they point towards novel therapeutic strategies for treating high blood pressure, an issue affecting a significant portion of the global population.

For further details, the research is published in Circulation Research.
