Weather Update for Bangkok
Bangkok is preparing for another heavy rain spell following recent severe flooding that impacted thousands of residents and led to numerous flight cancellations at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The Thai Meteorological Department has issued warnings for thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall expected on 5th and 6th October.
Recent Rainfall and Flooding
Last month, Bangkok experienced extraordinary rainfall, totaling about 320mm in just three days—nearly the entire monthly average for September. This resulted in flooding across 42 of the city’s 50 districts, affecting approximately 700,000 individuals across more than 329,000 households.
As of now, water levels are receding in many parts of the capital, but low-lying areas like Lat Krabang and Rom Klao continue to experience flooding. Authorities are actively pumping water into the canal network to alleviate flooding.
Official Statements
Bangkok’s governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, has attempted to ease concerns about potential flooding from the upcoming rains. He noted that canal levels were lowered in anticipation and does not expect flooding of similar magnitude to last week.
Forecast and Preparedness
The Thai Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected across Bangkok and parts of central Thailand from 5th to 7th October.
