Iran Celebrates Significant Achievements in Space Sector and Enhances Domestic Satellite Technologies

Iran has made significant strides in its space industry over the last two years, demonstrating advancements in satellite development and launch vehicle capabilities, according to the head of the Iranian Space Agency (ISA). At a Space Week event, Hassan Salarieh highlighted the importance of expanding the practical use of space technology and building a space-based economy as strategic priorities for the nation.

Salarieh noted the coordinated efforts among various institutions, including the Ministries of Defense and Information and Communications Technology, as well as universities and research centers. He emphasized the growing involvement of private-sector companies in Iran’s space ecosystem, contributing to the development of space technologies and services.

Key achievements include the successful launch of the Nahid-2 telecommunications satellite—the first of its kind developed in Iran—and advancements in indigenous launch vehicles like the Qaem-100 and Simorgh. The Chamran satellite mission marked Iran’s first orbital proximity maneuver, showcasing enhanced spacecraft control capabilities.

Iran is also advancing its remote-sensing satellite technology, with the Paya satellite and the upcoming Pars-2 satellite providing high-resolution imaging for various civilian applications. The government is increasingly leveraging private-sector capabilities, with three privately developed satellites already launched. This shift is aimed at broadening the industrial base and fostering commercial opportunities.

Salarieh reiterated that developing a space economy remains a strategic national objective, focusing on translating technological advancements into tangible economic and social benefits. Overall, Iran’s advancements in its space sector reflect a commitment to integrating satellite design, launch systems, and commercial applications to enhance both technical capabilities and societal impact.
