Community’s Contribution to the Space Satellite Industry Recognized

The town of Guildford in Surrey is set to celebrate World Space Week with a series of events highlighting the region’s significant contributions to the space and satellite industry. This initiative, organized by the University of Surrey and the Institute of Physics, takes place on 10 October at the Tunsgate Quarter Shopping Centre.

The University of Surrey boasts a leading space center, contributing to the development of Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) in Guildford, which is currently involved in various missions, including climate monitoring and a commercial lunar communications service. Jennifer Barry, a senior systems engineer at SSTL, emphasized the importance of space in everyday technologies, from weather forecasting to medical imaging.

The event will showcase models, propulsion tanks, circuit boards, and satellite panels, offering an engaging experience for attendees. Barry also advises aspiring professionals in the field to gain transferable skills, as many come from diverse backgrounds outside of space.
