Crowds Unite for an Extraordinary Cornstock Festival | Arts & Culture

University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Homecoming Parade and Cornstock Festival

On October 2, 2026, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln kicked off its school year with a vibrant Homecoming Parade and the Cornstock Festival. Festivities began at 5:30 p.m., attracting students and alumni to the streets of 16th and R to secure their spots along the parade route.

Raymond Nketsiah, a participant from the International Student Scholar Office, shared his motivation for joining the parade: “To represent my country, Ghana. When people see a flag, they ask about your country.”

The parade featured numerous campus-registered organizations, fraternities, sororities, convertibles, tractors, and the Cornhusker Marching Band, leading the procession alongside members of the Homecoming royalty.

After finishing at the east side of Memorial Stadium, attendees were welcomed at the Cornstock Festival, a carefully planned event led by Hollie Swanson, Director of Strategic Events at Nebraska Unions. Swanson noted, “We started planning this back in January. Our theme this year is ‘Cosmic Cornhuskers’, which was evident in the decorations and outfits of parade-goers, many of whom dressed as aliens or astronauts.”

Despite a week of rain leading up to the event, the weather cooperated, making for a delightful evening. Food trucks like The Corndog Company and Papi Churros added to the festive atmosphere, supported by tickets from the Residents’ Housing Association for students.

Cornstock also featured booths offering activities like face painting and caricature portraits, promoting university resources such as the Sheldon Museum of Art. Swanson expressed appreciation for the University Programming Council, which plays a crucial role in organizing the festival.

The night concluded with an exciting drone show that creatively combined Cornhusker logos with celestial themes, including a humorous reference to the Maryland Terrapins opposing the Cornhuskers that week.

Swanson emphasized the importance of such events in fostering connections between students and the university, stating, “When we can provide these fun opportunities, they feel a deeper connection to the institution as a whole.”
