Study Reveals Unexpected Benefit of Decaf Coffee Compared to Caffeinated Varieties: ScienceAlert

Recent research has shown that decaffeinated coffee may provide cognitive benefits absent in caffeinated coffee. In a small study, participants consuming decaf exhibited significant improvements in memory tests, while those drinking caffeinated coffee did not show similar enhancements.

The study, published in Nature Communications, suggests that components other than caffeine, potentially involved with gut microbes, play a role in coffee’s positive effects on the brain. Neuroscientist John Cryan from University College Cork highlighted that coffee includes numerous polyphenols, which are known to nourish gut bacteria.

During the experiment, 31 coffee drinkers abstained from coffee for two weeks, after which they were given either decaffeinated or caffeinated coffee. Both groups experienced positive changes in gut microbiomes. Participants reported reduced stress and depression symptoms, regardless of caffeine consumption. However, only caffeinated coffee was linked to decreased anxiety levels.

Significantly, the decaf group showed marked improvement on memory tasks related to words and locations, pointing to a potential broader impact of coffee—beyond just caffeine. Researchers are now exploring how coffee’s compounds may influence gut microbes and cognitive health.

These findings indicate that the benefits of coffee might extend beyond caffeine alone, potentially offering a new avenue for enhancing gut health and cognitive function.
