The NRL Grand Final featured a heartfelt tribute to Rabbitohs player Jai Arrow, starting with Amy Shark singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” a cappella. As the performance continued, Arrow took a victory lap amidst an emotional atmosphere, celebrating with fans holding lights in tribute to him. Arrow’s retirement due to Motor Neuron Disease earlier this year added depth to the tribute.
The event evolved with Amy Shark singing “What’s Up” alongside Dave Gleeson and performances from bands like Grinspoon and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Reuben Styles from Peking Duk made a surprise appearance after initially announcing he wouldn’t perform. Phil Jamieson from Grinspoon joined for a rendition of “Simply The Best.”
The entertainment faced a tumultuous lead-up, including the cancellation of discussions with Tones and I for a performance, leaving fans initially disappointed. NRL boss Peter V’landys announced the $1 million usually allocated for entertainment would support grassroots initiatives, but eventually opted to honor Arrow instead, reassuring fans of a “big surprise” before the Grand Final.
The pre-game show concluded with a fireworks display, leading directly into the Grand Final match.
