Illinois Catering Company Shut Down Following Illness Outbreak Among High School Football Team Before Homecoming

In Illinois, health officials shut down an unlicensed home-based caterer after food served at a high school football team’s dinner sickened at least 45 attendees, leading to the postponement of the team’s homecoming game. The incident occurred on September 24, when players, coaches, and parents gathered for a taco bar meal catered by Sunshine and Spice.

The meal included various items, and by late evening, many began experiencing severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Fortunately, no one required hospitalization, and most recovered within a day. The school postponed the game until all affected players were symptom-free for at least 24 hours following health guidelines.

The caterer, Joshua Harris, was found to have operated without the necessary licenses and food safety certifications. He stated that the ingredients were sourced from local retailers, and expressed his regret for the incident, ensuring that there was no intent to serve unsafe food. The health investigation is ongoing, with testing of leftover food taking place, and a significant portion of those who became ill identified cilantro corn rice, fajita chicken, and cheese as the most commonly consumed items.

As a consequence of the event, Rock Island High School remains winless for the season after losing their game that Friday.
