Chinese Automakers Halt Mexico Production Due to USMCA Trade Concerns

Major Chinese automakers have paused their multi-billion-dollar assembly plant plans in Mexico due to regulatory uncertainties surrounding the USMCA and increasing geopolitical pressures from the U.S. Although there’s a temporary freeze, established legacy automakers are preparing for Chinese-branded vehicles to begin production in as little as two to three years.

Automakers such as BYD, Chery, MG, Geely, Great Wall Motors, and GAC have delayed or paused projects amid strict economic security policies from Washington that aim to limit Chinese companies’ role in North American supply chains. Experts indicate that while interest in the Latin American market remains, the legal and regulatory environment is causing hesitation.

The impending joint review of the USMCA has heightened fears among Asian OEMs regarding the future of rules governing the percentage of Chinese-sourced components allowed in vehicles made in Mexico for preferential trade. With no guarantees regarding the rules of origin, Chinese manufacturers are opting to wait for better clarity.

In contrast, Chinese firms are heavily investing in Brazil, with over $6.5 billion pledged for manufacturing hubs. Despite the current delays, analysts believe that Chinese companies view Mexico as a key market due to strong domestic sales and export potential, provided the regulatory environment stabilizes.

Stalled Projects Include:

  • MG: Planned a $1.05 billion assembly plant investment but has not confirmed a location.
  • BYD: Cancelled plans for a facility after multiple interest signals.
  • GAC: Postponed semi-knocked-down assembly plans to late 2026.
  • Geely: Explored acquiring production lines but did not finalize the deal.
  • Chirey: Seeking local partners for assembly, viewing it as essential.

Meanwhile, local production by Chinese automakers is still projected to happen within the next two to three years, despite tariffs on imported Chinese vehicles. Local manufacturing could also help Chinese brands gain a competitive pricing edge.
