Governor Kay Ivey has announced Alabama’s entry into the competition to host the proposed United States Space Academy, with Huntsville as the state’s preferred location. This initiative aims to educate and cultivate the next generation of space leaders.

Ivey’s announcement comes just before President Donald Trump’s October 2 visit to Alabama. Her office confirmed that an initial response has been submitted to the Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy, led by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. This response reflects Alabama’s rich history in space exploration, national defense, and workforce development.

“Alabama helped send America to the moon, and we are ready to help prepare the Americans who will take us even further,” Ivey said. She highlighted the forthcoming Space Command Headquarters and existing institutions like NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Space Camp, stating that these elements provide a strong foundation for the state’s bid.

The effort to bring the U.S. Space Academy to Huntsville involves collaboration among state and local leaders, educational institutions, and the aerospace defense community.

“Huntsville’s legacy in space exploration is more than just history; the city is a thriving engine for America’s future,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. He emphasized Huntsville’s innovative spirit and its established track record in aerospace, from the Saturn V rocket to modern advancements in propulsion and defense technologies.

According to the Governor’s Office, Huntsville’s unique mix of federal, military, academic, and industry expertise positions Alabama to fulfill the academy’s mission of fostering leaders in science, engineering, and astronautics.

“Alabama has never lacked the ingenuity or determination to take on a mission of national importance,” Ivey added, expressing pride in building an academy that will enhance the nation’s leadership in space for generations.
