University of Kansas Honors Isaac Melanson with Inaugural Endowed Professorship

LAWRENCE — Isaac Melanson, an assistant professor at the University of Kansas specializing in research related to intellectual and developmental disabilities, has been awarded the inaugural Donald M. Baer and Elsie M. Pinkston Endowed Professorship in the Department of Applied Behavioral Science.

This endowed professorship is designed to support early and midcareer faculty focused on behavior analysis, providing financial assistance for salary, travel, research, and teaching expenses.

Melanson’s research primarily centers on the prevention of challenging behaviors in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, utilizing safe and valid functional assessment methods, and exploring preferences and choices. He is a board-certified behavior analyst at the doctoral level, with extensive experience in clinical supervision regarding severe challenging behaviors, as well as implementing skill acquisition programs for young learners.

Claudia Dozier, professor and chair of the applied behavioral science department, stated, “Melanson was the perfect choice to be the first Baer-Pinkston endowed professor, honoring two crucial figures in the department and the field of behavior analysis.”

Dozier emphasized that this professorship will enhance Melanson’s capacity to expand his research, foster new collaborations, engage students in research, and amplify the impact of his work.

In response, Melanson expressed his gratitude, noting that the funding will significantly advance his lab’s initiatives. He remarked, “I have felt incredibly supported by both my department and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences since my first day at KU. I am honored and grateful for the additional motivation and resources this provides.”
